- Before you move, complete address change forms for post office, IRS, etc.
- Ask questions. If you do not understand something, ask. The moving business is complex and has its own language.
- Close current bank account (s), making sure there are no outstanding items and wire balance to your new bank.
- Be reachable by phone. Make sure the carrier is able to reach you by phone during your move. This can save time and storage costs if the driver is ready to deliver and you ready to receive the shipment.
- Notify water, electric, newspaper, telephone, and cable companies that you are moving
- Take Valuables with You. Valuables, such as cash, coins, jewelry, photographs, and important papers should be taken with you or sent ahead. Be sure to use a traceable service, such as FedEx and United Parcel Service.
- Keep important documents with you and make duplicates. If moving out of an apartment, reserve the elevator.
- Segregate Personal Travel Items. The items traveling with you, such as clothes and papers, should be put in one place or in the vehicle you are taking with you. Avoid having those items loaded on the truck and having to find them later.
- Find doctors, fire and police stations close to your new home. Get all medical records from your doctors and ask for referrals.
- Have your driver’s license, auto registration, and tags renewed after moving and look for auto insurance policies.
- Try to relax. No matter how prepared you are things occasionally go wrong. Moving is one of the most stressful times in your life. Take a deep breath, be patient, and get a good night’s sleep before moving day.
- Make sure your belongings are insured and record details such as serial numbers on electronics (or take photos) before packing.
- Research laws in your new surroundings regarding business and getting a license.
- Keep the following packing supplies nearby: tape measure, tape and scissors, boxes, bubble wrap, newspaper, marking pen.
- Revise your will and other legal documents to avoid fees.
- If you belong to churches, clubs, or organizations, move your membership to your new city.
- Make sure each box you have does not exceed 50 pounds.
- Get your pet’s health certificate from the vet if it will be going by plane.
- Rugs and clothing should be cleaned and wrapped before moving.
- Write which room each box goes in and whether it’s fragile and needs to be unloaded first.
- Examine all drawers, cabinets, closets, etc. to make sure they’re empty before you leave.
